Description: IZ number 281; lot count 1; Microslide 01, balsam, section; Microslide 02, balsam, section; type status comment: The specimen was labeled "Spongia dura (Hyatt) var. gravida." That variety combination could not be found. However, the common name "hard head" was written on the label in Verrill's hand. As the sponge was received from the Boston Society of Natural History, is from the correct locality and the common name "hard head" was used by Hyatt, 1877 in the description of Spongia agaricina dura var. typica, this specimen is most likely a syntype of that species.
